Just so everyone knows, they’re giving away free bottles of wine to everyone who goes through Tbilisi airport’s passport control. Just saying. I think it’s their way of apologizing for the fact that every single flight here seems to arrive at 3am local time.
As usual, my first day has been a bit overwhelming. After a nap, I headed downtown to check out how all the renovation, restoration, and new construction projects are getting along. There were about as many candy pastel colors as I expected (Old Tbilisi’s new color scheme appears to be “Easter egg”) and some, er, “interesting” new architectural forms cropping up on the landscape (I’m looking at you, crumpled aluminum foil tube-shaped theater near the Always Ultra Bridge). But the old City Hall in Freedom Square got a refreshingly understated facelift, so I can’t complain too much.
After that I fielded a blatantly Green Card-motivated marriage proposal at a bus stop, and then had a lovely reunion with friends at the Coffee Room. Looking forward to a real Georgian dinner tomorrow!
